    A fun and beautiful piece of history
    The three-cent nickel was voted in by Congress in 1865 to replace the troublesome three-cent paper money, printed during the economic turmoil of the American Civil War. These coins initially circulated well, but fell from favor in 1866 when the five-cent coin was introduced.
