Real H-code Hemi Coronet in ultra-rare Medium Mauve Metallic. 4-speed, power steering, freshly upgraded 4-wheel Wilwood disc brakes, rebuilt engine, new exhaust. Documented with original build sheet, receipts, and ownership history dating back 40 years. Incredible car!
Mauve isn’t most people’s first choice when building a sledgehammer of a car like this 1966 Dodge Coronet Hemi, but now that you’ve seen it, it looks pretty awesome, doesn’t it? You can probably count the number of factory-built Mauve Hemi Coronets on one hand, making it one of the rarest of the first-year Street Hemis. Add in the killer stance and a good dose of originality, an the result is the proverbial iron fist in a silk glove. This sucker speaks softly and carries a very big stick. We have ownership history dating back to the 80s, with conscientious owners who appreciated this Coronet for what it is rather than erasing its history. We believe that much of the paint is original, with perhaps the doors and hood being repainted at some point, and it all has a consistent look. In fact, a little wear and tear only adds to this car’s appeal—the color certainly does not suggest that this car is soft. There are a few marks and signs of age, a slight scuff behind the right rear wheel well, a little ding in the driver’s door, but it’s part of the car’s history. It would be a crime to repaint this car. The “garage” hood scoop was added at some point and looks right at home since the factory designed it for this car, and the chrome remains in consistently good shape throughout. We love the way this car looks!
Parchment is the right choice inside, and most of the upholstery is new stuff from Legendary, including the seat covers and carpets. But again, there’s plenty of originality and none of it was erased when the seats were freshened. The big steering wheel frames a fairly complete set of gauges and we like the fact that they resisted the urge to strap a tach to the steering column. Instead, there are auxiliary gauges down low in a custom panel under the dash that also houses a Pioneer AM/FM/cassette stereo head unit (not that you’ll need it after you hear this sucker run). The factory 4-speed manual transmission is fitted with a Hurst T-handle shifter that needs a confident hand—the Hemi is not about being delicate. The dash pad and headliner are in excellent shape and everything works except the clock. The trunk was refinished with a reproduction mat, the battery was relocated, and the original space-saver spare is stowed underneath.
Speaking of underhood, we believe this is the car’s original engine, although Chrysler wasn’t stamping VINs on the engines in 1966. It was rebuilt by noted Hemi specialists Fowler Engines several years ago (we have receipts) and features upgraded aluminum heads from Indy Cylinder Head, but is otherwise fairly stock. Even with two giant Carter carburetors on top, it firs up easily and idles well once it’s got a little heat in it, just like all Hemis. Chrome valve covers add a bit of flash, but the rest is more or less how the factory did it, including Hemi Orange paint on the block, that giant air cleaner up top, and not much space for anything else. Power steering is a nice find in a car with that much iron over the front axle and makes this Coronet remarkably easy to handle on the street. That was always the goal—make an easy cruiser that can bring the pain when needed. I’d think they succeeded.
The undercarriage is original, so don’t expect shiny perfection. On the other hand, there’s zero structural rust or rot, just surface scale, so the platform is totally solid for all that horsepower running through it. The 4-speed shifts crisply and has a recent clutch with smooth action. The original 4.56 gears were removed in favor of more streetable 3.54s, and with all that torque on tap it’s a smart choice that makes the car easy to live with. Gorgeous TTI ceramic-coated long-tube headers feed a new dual exhaust system that sounds epic but quiets down when you’re going easy. And with that much go on tap, it’s important to have plenty of stop, so a set of 4-wheel Wilwood disc brakes were recently installed to keep things under control. Great idea! There’s also a new gas tank hanging out back and new springs that give it that killer NASCAR stance. Fresh steel wheels look suitably butch and carry staggered 225/70/15 front and 275/60/15 rear BFGoodrich T/A radials.
This car includes A LOT of extras, including the aforementioned Chrysler Corporation Broadcast Sheet, receipts for 40 years’ worth of maintenance, manuals, vintage photos, and notes from previous owners. Extra parts include the original drum brakes and spindles, original hubcaps, weather seals, hoses, lines, gauges, factory distributor, and a whole lot more.
This isn’t a car for the guy who likes to blend in. The color alone is a unique choice, but the ultra-nasty attitude means nobody will ever second-guess your decision to own it. Expertly built and tuned, sensibly upgraded, and heavily documented, it’s everything you want from a Hemi. The only question remains: are you man enough to drive it? Call today!
Harwood Motors always recommends and welcomes personal or professional inspections of any vehicle in our inventory prior to purchase.
