    The mintage of this date is just half of what it had been for 1868, a clear indication that additional pieces were being made solely to replace those lost through normal attrition and redemption. Mint State examples are moderately scarce, while gems are very elusive.
    With its smaller coinage, the 1869 three-cent piece seems to have fewer poorly struck and heavily clashed coins than in previous years. Varieties are more numerous than expected, and the better ones are recognized

    recently purchased from a large estate collection in which I bought the entirety of because of the originality and rarity of the coins which have not seen the light of day in over four decades!
