This fun-loving little band of pawky Mice became the major supporting actors within Disney’s 1950 release of Cinderella which was the first Animated Full-length film since 1942. This wonderful Walt Disney’s Classics Piece was framed under glass with a backing soon after purchase which has protected it for years!
The movie was perfectly cast in terms of animation. Marc Davis and Eric Larson drew the title character, Frank Thomas animated the stepmother, Ollice Johnston did the comic stepsisters and Milt Kahl was responsible for the King, the Duke as well as the Fairy Godmother. There was no better animator to take on Lucifer the cat, and the mice characters than Ward Kimball
By the late 1940’s, there had been numerous designs and concepts for the animated mice by Story Artist, Bill Peet. So how on earth would you go about creating fresh looking personalities for these rodents? Ward Kimball polished these concepts for full animation and animated them with his sense of zany timing and inventive acting. Everyone of the poses for Jaq and Gus show the energy and characteristics of a real mouse. Ward’s free-thinking as an animator provided him the opportunities to express his own creativity in the midst of a larger story. Kimball was also in charge of Lucifer the cat, and he gave that character one of his best efforts, sending the feline into a spasm of excitement during his search for the mouse Gus Gus hidden beneath a teacup.
As the archnemesis of the mice, Lucifer was deliciously evil and unapologetically mischievous. Walt Disney himself found inspiration for Lucifer’s pillow-like body in Kimball’s family cat during a visit to his home. Kimball’s band of Cinderella’s mice, Jaq, Gus, Suzy, Perla, Blossom, Luke, Mert and Bert become the most popular characters of the film!
