These
original, full size, 3 inch
, Sterling Silver US Army Air Corps Service Pilot Wings are a premium World War II aviation collectible.   These wings are multi-part sterling silver construction.  After stamping from a thick sheet or sterling silver, a hinged pin and roller catch were soldered to the reverse side.  The device is marked "STERLING" behind the left wing on the reverse side.
Army Service Pilots were largely older men, with pre-war airline or air transport experience.  They were not considered candidates for combat flying.  Nevertheless, these men joined the U.S Army Air Forces at the outset of war, wore the USAAF Officer uniform, with these Service Pilot Wings pinned above the left breast pocket.  They soldiered into World War II flying valuable transport of troops and materiel, in support of the war effort.
